Inside Out Outside In

Adobe Main Page Flash Detection Problem

The redirect from Macromedia to the Adobe domain is complete, but unfortunately, on my browser, the Flash will not load on the Adobe main page.

It worked find on the old Macromedia home page as well as any other site that has Flash content.  Even the current install page for the Flash player works correctly.

I've tried un-installing Flash, cleaned the objects from the browser, deleted all files from the browser and even gone as far as toasting the C:\\WINNT\\system32\\macromed folder.

In my environment, Internet Explorer is the corporate standard.  Fortunately, my group has the luxury of not having our system locked down, which lets me run FireFox as well, but I still have to code all my web based applications for Internet Explorer.  FireFox loads the main Adobe page fine.

I'm just not willing to completely un-install and re-install Internet Explorer just because one site doesn't display right.  That just doesn't sit well with standard troubleshooting practice.  When a feature works fine on an overwhelming majority of other sites, then the site it doesn't work on is at fault.

If anyone has any ideas, let me know.

John Dowdell's Gravatar When you say "Internet Explorer", can you give us some more ideas on what you mean? OS (w/servicepack); browser version, Flash Player version (in ActiveX wrapper); any browser customizations (particularly on browserScript, caching, controls).\n\nI'm guessing it may be an IE cache issue -- these seem to be the most common cause for similar symptoms -- but I don't know enough yet about what might be different there to reliably guess the cause.\n\n(Stock IE 6.0.2900 on XP sp2 pulls adobe.com in fine for me, with current FP8.5 beta.)

admin's Gravatar John,\n\nIt works fine on my IE at home (XP media center edition)\n\nAt work I use Windows 2000. We're a little slow on being able to upgrade. Windows XP was just approved last year for official installs, but only for newly deployed systems.\n\nI thought it might be cache as well, but I've deleted all files/objects multiple times using Tools->Temporary Internet Files, basically every option, and as noted before, I've dug under the hood as well trying to clear any remaining bits stuffed away somewhere in the system folder as well as the Documents and Settings folder. I have IE configured to check for new version on every visit. Still no joy.\n\nThe Flash SWF on the main page isn't even activated, if you right-context click on the black, the "about flash" doesn't occur. The rest of the page appears to have refreshed since the menu drops (JavaScript and/or css based) are working.\n\nVersion Info:\n\nActive X Control: Shockwave Flash Object/Macromedia Flash Player 8.0 r24\n\nInternet Explorer Version 6.0.2800.1106 with multiple updates, or more precisely reported;\n{ appCodeName: Mozilla;\nappName: Microsoft Internet Explorer;\nappMinorVersion: ;SP1;Q832894;Q330994;Q837009;Q831167;Q823353;Q867801;Q833989;;\ncpuClass: x86;\nplatform: Win32;\nplugins: ;\nopsProfile: ;\nuserProfile: ;\nsystemLanguage: en-us;\nuserLanguage: en-us;\nappVersion: 4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.40607);\nuserAgent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.40607);\nonLine: true;\ncookieEnabled: true;\nmimeTypes: }

John Dowdell's Gravatar whoops, and I forgot to ask which page had which problem too, the team would need that to be sure they've reproduced it. Maybe if you could notify them directly at webfeedback@adobe.com, and leave my poor memory out of it...? ;-) tx, jd

Geoff's Gravatar You probably just have a bad Flash Player install.\n\nWhen you said you uninstalled Flash Player, did you download and run the uninstaller from the adobe site?\n\nTry that and it will probably fix your problem.

admin's Gravatar Just ran the Uninstaller located in C:\\WINNT\\system32\\Macromed\\Flash\\UninstFL.exe\n\nRefreshed the Adobe main page, detected that Flash wasn't installed and displayed the non-flash version. Went to the installer page, re-installed flash, working "Flash Installed" swf appears. Went back to home page and force refresh, still getting the black box. A real head scratcher.\n\nI'll try downloading the uninstaller again and jump through the hoop a few more times.

admin's Gravatar FYI: The uninstall_flash_player.exe (ref technote: 14157)didn't help the situation either.

João Fernandes's Gravatar Can you check this 2 ?\nWe deploy usually the MSI with SMS Server and we got some issues (never fixed by MM)\n\n1) Check if the following entries do exist in your registry:\n\n[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Classes\\Interface\\{6D5140C1-7436-11CE-8034-00AA006009FA}]\n@="IServiceProvider"\n[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Classes\\Interface\\{6D5140C1-7436-11CE-8034-00AA006009FA}\\NumMethods]\n@="4"\n[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Classes\\Interface\\{6D5140C1-7436-11CE-8034-00AA006009FA}\\ProxyStubClsid32]\n@="{B8DA6310-E19B-11D0-933C-00A0C90DCAA9}"\n[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Classes\\Interface\\{A6EF9860-C720-11D0-9337-00A0C90DCAA9}]\n@="IDispatchEx"\n[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Classes\\Interface\\{A6EF9860-C720-11D0-9337-00A0C90DCAA9}\\NumMethods]\n@="15"\n[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Classes\\Interface\\{A6EF9860-C720-11D0-9337-00A0C90DCAA9}\\ProxyStubClsid32]\n@="{C5598E60-B307-11D1-B27D-006008C3FBFB}"\n\n2) right click on HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\CLSID\\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000} and select permissions. Check if "Everyone" is not set to Deny.
